Today I got called on the Instagram flashmob #mefiveyearsago ( for some reason it's only a russian thing...) and it made me look through my old photos again and think about my style.
I made this collage 2 years ago while analyzing my style changes. Of course, before that there were big changes too, but I feel that my life really started only in 2008 when I found out I'm moving to the big city for study. After 2012 there were some big changes too - I may add them to this collage later)
For many years I've been changing my style, haircut and color - sometimes it was even every two months - searching for my perfect look. Since I've started dying my hair at the age of 12 and discovered myself as a goth at 13 I've been looking at gorgeous, bright, eye catching internet models, thinking "I must change my look... and one day that will be me! and putting in one piercing affter another, dying my hair one color after another to get at least one step closer to them. It was like an obsession. Brighter, more and more unusual! Make people stare at me!
But last year after rocking mermaid blue-green hair for almost a year I realized something....
Your hair and makeup, all your face mods are just decorations. When you color yourself bright and bold your true colors fade... All you see is a picture, a scheme of hair, drawn on eyebrows, makeup, a handful of piercing and nothing behind it.
Then you try to tame your inner comic book character and learn yourself and your face. You realize that your eyes have a very pretty color that is supported by your skin and lip tone, that your face in unique and some parts of it you love the most. You have to make only slight differences to enhance your facial features and discover your true beauty, only a little of makeup intead of drawing a "mask" on.
What's this whole story is for? I learned that bright hair, makeup and piercing distract from your face. If you want people to treasure the true you (and not the color pattern you put on) you should only enhance what you already have.
BONUS: me in 2009 vs me in 2014
