I had an instructor, doctorate in professional counseling and licensed professional counselor in the state of South Carolina who works for the South Carolina Department of Corrections, actually say in class that she does not believe atheists would benefit from AA because its a spiritual thing. I admit that AA was started in 1935 by Christians but that does not mean an atheist would benefit from it as well. I even went so far as to send her a link of agnostic oriented AA meetings world wide.
