This afternoon, at a grocery store, I heard the most depressing song ever written.
So what is it? One of Joy Division's ode to suicidal despair? A Nine Inch Nails song?
No, it's "Let's Twist Again" by Chubby Checker. It's just three minutes of sheer desperation, of a man knowing that obscurity is right around the corner, that his little brush with fame is ending. "Let's twist again/like we did last summer," he pleads with you. "Let's twist again/like we did last year." In short, please tell me you still love me. Please tell me it's not over. Please tell me I'm still a rock star and that I won't be bussing tables again soon.
It's absolutely chilling.
