So, last night I was sitting in my room and I heard three gunshots in the street outside my building, followed by a fourth that sounded different; I was thinking it might be return fire from a different weapon. I went to the front of the apartment and my roommate was out on the balcony. I asked her what was happening and said that she hadn't seen anything, but she had heard a taxi driver saying that someone was shooting into the air. He was excited and talking fast, plus he was down on the street, so that's all she had heard. There were several police cars there already (I live on a street that's full of bars and on Thursday and Friday nights there are cops everywhere, so the response time for this incident was just a few seconds) but we didn't see anything other than that. We saw the cops looking at the ground in front of one of the cars, but we were thinking that maybe it was bullet casings or some other kind of evidence. The car moved to better block the street and then we saw. There was a guy laying the street with half of his head missing.
My other roommate called me then. He had actually been walking by and had seen the whole thing, he even knew the guy and so he filled me in on the details. The guys was a bartender at one of the bars across the street. He had called the police and told them that someone was threatening to kill them self and that they had better get there fast. He then walked into the middle of the street, fired three shots into the air and one into his head.
To be honest, right now my main feeling on this matter is relief. When I first saw the body I had thought somebody had been murdered. Obviously, suicide isn't exactly a great thing either, but if you had to pick one to be happening at random in your neighborhood, well...
This are probably going to be a bit strange here for a little while.
