So I watched Kung Fu Hustle a couple of nights ago. I was really pleasantly surprised at how good of a movie it was. I expected silliness, I expected some typical genre improbability, and i expected a good time, but in a "Kung Pow: Enter The Fist" kind of good time.
i didn't know who Stephen Chow was, but apparently he has this love for the old 60's and 70s Hong Kong Kung Fu movies, and wanted to make a traditional movie. he did, but alsoaded his own unique elements. The scene where the landlady chases the hero is hilarious- she never loses the cigarette for a second!!
He also was able to coax a couple of the old stars out of retirement, who hadn't acted in decades in some instances. It is the highest grossing Hong Kong film EVER. Really enjoyable.
Last night I went to a hoity tu cocktail party/dinner fundraiser for the current Mayor's campaign next year. Thought it would be a good networking opportunity, get my views aired, etc. I did get some good time with the Mayor, and met a couple of people who were decent, but most of the people weren't even from Louisville. I suspect their motives- why are you here? If you want to turn L-Ville into Chicago, why did you ever leave Chicago?
I spent a good deal of the evening wndering why I was there.
