On July 7, Japan celebrates the Star Festival, also known as Tanabata. The festival follows the legend of two stars (now known as Vega and Altair) separated by the Milky Way representing two lovers meeting on the one day each year they are able to see each other. In observance, people write wishes on pieces of bamboo paper and tie them to trees.
One year, the Prime Minister of Japan called for a campaign for people to turn out their lights from 20:00-22:00 (8 pm-10 pm) so people could see the Milky Way for the festival.
What would you wish for on Tanabata? When was the last time you saw the Milky Way?
See you under the stars,
