Randi grew up an ambitious child. He wanted to be the best at anything he did.
In 1998, Randi turned 12, the age in Denali where children can become Pokémon Trainers and start their journey. Due to the harsh conditions and sparse population of the Denali wilderness, new Trainers start at a later age than most regions and travel with a guide. Randi received a Charmander as a starter Pokémon from Professor Spruce, the authority on Pokémon science in the Denali region. Randi left with Spruce's son Taro as his guide.
By 2002, Randi was an established Denali League contender at age 16. He had worked with many different types of Pokémon but seemed to establish an affinity to Psychic Pokémon. Curiously, Randi never had the psychic capabilities of Espers, people with extrasensory powers that typically train Psychic Pokémon exclusively.
In the spring of 2002, Randi began a world tour aspiring to be an international Trainer. He began his international journey in Orange, a tropical region quite a bit south of Unova. He spent most of his time around Napama City, known primarily as a beachfront party destination for young people. Partying less on his mind as becoming a master Trainer, an encounter outside the city changed the course of his life:
>>I encountered something spectacular in the Saint Orange State Park east of Napama City. On Shellder Island, only accessible by ferry, I heard rustling in the sand reeds. I turned around several times looking for the source of the noises finding nothing. Because I spent so much time investigating the phenomenon, I lost track of time and missed the last ferry back to town. Returning to the beach to set up camp, a floating, pink cat-like Pokémon suddenly made its appearance. It was the Mythical Pokémon Mew! It was laughing at me!
After calming a bit, upset by the pranks and my predicament, I threw Pokéballs at Mew, only to have them bounce off of a pink barrier. The Mythical Pokémon continued to tease me as Charizard, unable to fly due to exhaustion, grew restless as the night dragged on.
In the morning, about an hour before the first ferry, Mew reappeared during teardown of camp. I told the Pokémon I would no longer attempt to catch it and kindly requested to leave me and my Pokémon be. Mew scurried around playfully, thanking me for playing with it! It continued following me.
***
From this point, the Mythical Pokémon followed Randi. He never caught the Pokémon per se, though occasionally curious things would happen in his battles. Mew would let Randi touch it, but it would phase away any time Randi tried to show it to anyone.
