Something Positive: Part 1
In an effort to avoid using my journal as nothing more than a dumping ground for my stress and current events, I am going to try and devote some journal space to various things that have had a positive impact on me, no matter how trivial in the larger scheme of things...
But Instead of talking about what I originally decided to make the subject of my first positive journal, there is something else that struck me as far more important to mention. Like most people on SG, I was surprised and saddened to hear about the passing of Benni Suicide. I did not know Benni; I never spoke to her, never commented in her journal and never left a witty remark in one of her sets. But I was saddened all the same by the passing of someone so young.
I spent some time reading through some member's reactions to Benni's passing. And while there was the expected number of members expressing their condolences, there were also quite a few people with comments that spoke more to what kind of person Benni was. They speak of her wit and her good humor; her kindness to those who met her in person and to new members here at SG just looking for a friend to talk to. It made me think about the real tragedy in the passing of someone so young; just how many people will never get to benefit from knowing someone like Benni. And if the opinions and sadness expressed by some of the members here on SG whose opinions I have come to greatly respect is any indicator; that lost opportunity is a tragedy for all of us.
And as much as I have heard the joking comment "You come for the girls, but you stay for the community" in the year I have been a member at SG, I have never seen a better example of how good the members here can be for one another than now. This is a cool community, no matter how many "Sinking Ship!!!" posts get tossed around on the boards. And I'm happy I made the decision to jump aboard last year.
If some people are upset that I posted this with the title "something positive", I apologize, but I come from a family that generally spends little time mourning, and a lot of time celebrating the life and legacy of those we have lost. "Something positive" here, best describes the impact that Benni, or someone like her can have on a lot of us, usually without us being aware of it. Think about how many people somehow contribute to all of the laughter and little moments of contentment or joy in your life. They are often everywhere, and taken for granted by most of us. So take a minute to at least drop a hello to your friends on SG; it won't take long, and it'll mean more to that person than the effort to do so will cost you.
