No wonder they call it “Taxachusetts.” The MA tax collectors are completely retarded. A friend at work got a notice from them, claiming he owes them $1500 in taxes ($900 plus interest) for 2001. That's interesting, because he was an MIT student, and MIT deducted $1100 from his paychecks that year, as reflected on his W-2 form. He submitted a tax return and got his $200 back. This he helpfully pointed out to the tax collectors, who assured him that he has not paid any tax, and proceeded to recalculate the interest to a slightly higher dollar amount.
As they are being completely unresponsive (hardly shocking, considering their lack of a nervous system), said friend has decided to use his W-2, and their ignorance, to get another $200 from the state. I'll keep you posted on his efforts.
