Notes from the enemy camp.
1. They seek and find opportunity for advancement of their position in every situation; note to self, evidence of this process can be detected in how much they ask of others while seeming to be giving and generous, yet how little they actually end up offering and how much reaping.
2. They disguise such ambition in shiny things that dazzle others eyes, what we call glamour. Note to self: glamour is the suggestion of something that no one can actually possess but that some select few give the impression of possessing; glamour never is, it cant be bought and its not a material issue, but a spiritual one -- so a homeless person can exude glamour, as long as said person is a sultry little street urchin with an aristocratic pedigree and a couple of friends that you didnt know were still alive, let alone befriendable.
3. Their success depends on everyone elses weaknesses. They will figure out for instance that everyone has a weakness for Francoise Hardy and her sultry voice, or for craziness or for obscure eastern european filmmakers, and they will add that to their repertoire.
4. They overcome their lack of a sense of humor by finding everything funny all the time. That way, they are never the person that doesnt get it.
5. They disguise their insatiable need for social approval with a claim to vanity, which is never even remotely met since vanity requires a generosity of personality and imagination which they dont have; they likewise posture an insecurity that insinuates sensitivity, but scratch a little deeper and youll find quite the opposite -- a disdain for anyone not of the superior level to which they are aggressively aspiring, and a sense of absolute, unquestioning Path in their Destiny.
6. Their whimsical behavior and outrageous personas help deflect a cold-blooded calculation for power at every step of the Game.
7. They are very afraid of death.
I am grateful to these people for the fools they make of the rest of us. We deserve nothing less, if we get off on nothing more.
