Growing up you always hear adults say "Don't stick out your tongue! Its rude/gross/mean/etc"
Of course as kids, you just wait until they turned around and give their back a nice shot of your tongue full force, wrinkled nose and all.
Now I was a little different. I would not only stick out my tongue to tease, or show others I didn't care, but also to drink. Yep, thats right, to drink.
I have a vivid memory of when I realized this wasn't common place. I was standing in the check out line at a grocery store with my mom and older sister. I was maybe 6-7 years old, and just a happy go lucky little girl. My sister had a Sobe drink (what ever happened to those?! Are they still around because they were DELICIOUS! Anywho, back to the story) and I really really wanted a sip. I asked and she said ok, but she would pour it into my mouth. So she grabbed my chin and brought the glass bottle towards my mouth. I opened up and stuck out my tongue and thats when it happened. She pulled it back laughing while tugging on my moms shirt sleeve. My mom turned around to see what she wanted and she said " Mom, watch this!" brought the bottle back towards me, I opened up and stuck my tongue out. And again, she pulled back laughing.
I didn't understand what was so funny, and my mom just shook her head and went back to unloading the cart. My sister teased me with the delicious drink several more times before I stomped my foot and demanded she just give me the drink and let me do it myself. Between her fits of laughter she handed me the bottle. I brought the drink up to my mouth, stuck out my tongue, put it into the neck of the bottle, and started to drink it.
My sister was dying from laughing so hard, and seeing me actually drink just made it worse. She ducked down so she could look up from the bottom, and pointed out that she could see my tongue inside the bottle while I drank. This made my mom look over, and give me a sideways look.
The way my sister was turning red from her fits of laughter, and the look on my moms face told me something was off, but I had no idea what it was.
Needless to say, on the way home I got a long talk about how to properly drink out of a cup/bottle/jug, sans sticking my tongue into it.
After that day my mom closely watched me and if she caught me sticking my tongue out as I went to take a drink I would hear "DONT STICK OUT YOUR TONGUE." And since then I have looked back on that day as probably the single most embarrassing thing I have ever done, yet something that really changed me.. And the way I drink ;P
