You know how people make a New Year's resolution? Most of the time, it's something reasonable, like limiting the amount of soda you'd drink, or to quit smoking by the end of the year, or the ever popular one, to lose weight. What I believe most people do is to try it out for the first month of whatever it is they promised to themselves, and see how it goes. If they don't like it, they give up on it.
Not me. Not this year, at least. I did the whole "I'm going to lose weight" thing, and I had a feeling that I would follow through with it back in November/December. A few reasons why.
1) I'm actually a fan of The Biggest Loser. Yeah, at first, I didn't think I'd care for that show, considering I don't really watch any TV shows at all. I mean if something good is on, I'll watch it. But I don't keep up with a series that often. But for whatever reason, this show gets my attention. Let me say right now that I'm no where as overweight as the contestants are on the show, and you can see that from my profile picture. But the motivation, will power, courage, and determination some of them have are amazing. Sweat dripping from every inch of their body kind of makes me want to go to the gym and have the same experience.
2) Because of the show, I have a membership at 24 Hour Fitness. It's a brand new location about 15 minutes away from where I live, and I've been a member there since the day after their opening day. So for about a year, I've been going there every now and then to sweat a bit and lift weights. Sometimes it's solo, sometimes it's with a partner. But I do go at least once a week on average. Sometimes seeing my bank statement reminds me I have a membership there, and I should go more often than once a week. Recently, however, it's been twice a week, so I'm kicking it up a notch.
3) Me and a friend of mine went out to Saddle Ranch out in Hollywood, right next to Universal City (the park). We were going to meet up with some other friends of mine, and as we approached the bar, I thought I saw a familiar face in the corner of my eye. I stopped and looked at him for a while, only seeing the back of his head, and I asked my friend "Is that... it looks like Ken." My friend said "Who's that? And where?" I pointed him out, and my friend was like "omg, I think it is!" He walked around to double check to see if we were right, and indeed, it was him.
Ken was a contestant of The Biggest Loser in the most recent season. He was at the same place we were, and at first, it looked like he was alone. A few minutes later, when we turned back to look at him, we saw almost the entire cast of The Biggest Loser, including the host (Alison Sweeney), and last year's winner (Patrick House). We kinda freaked out a bit, cause my friend is also a fan of the show. We were wondering if we should go up and say hi and that we're a fan, or if we should just leave them alone. Oh, we saw them after the final episode aired, but before the live finale. So no one knew who the winner was yet of this season.
My friend dragged me over and we talked to Ken and took a picture, then we talked to Patrick and took a picture, and then saw Arthur (the biggest contestant on the show ever) ride the mechanical bull. It didn't really feel real at first. It felt like I was just watching another episode, but when I turned around and saw just about everyone there, having their own conversations and doing their own things, it hit me that this is the real thing. Of course, this is the time when they have lost all of their weight since the start of the show. They told us that they already did their final official weigh-ins, and they were clueless themselves on who the winners were (for both at home, and the ultimate winner).
The whole point of that was that it was one of the biggest motivational things I could come across. A show that is about losing weight that has me hooked, and I meet the cast after they lose all of their weight. They were awesome, real people, with real stories, and some of the friendliest people you'd ever meet. The whole experience was just awesome.
So, back to my New Year's Resolution! At the start of the year, I weighed about 232 pounds. As of June 1st, I now weigh 198. I've lost about 34 pounds in five months. Everyone is noticing the change, including myself. It took me the longest to notice it, but what gives it away is the fact that my clothes aren't fitting the way they used to. It's time to go shopping!
My goal was to weigh 185 by the end of the year. At this rate, I can knock it down early, so I may have to set a new goal, which is to weigh 170. I think I can do it. I have a lot of time, and renewed motivation!
