Happy Birthday, Mikey_Dough!
I realized today that I'm a geek. It's a different kind of geek than your average A/V geek, or Mac geek, of film geek- although I am all those things. When I'm not making videos, I'm reading tarot cards, or planning my ancient Egyptian themed tattoo, or trying to remember to practice belly dance, or delving into the complexities of the sitar. You could say I suffer from some sort of "white people" culture void, and am trying to fill it with these activities. You also could be right.
Seems like the only reason anyone knows about the sitar is because of Moulin Rouge and the penniless sitar player. Which is ok, I guess. First of all, I can imagine I could wind up spending all my money on playing it and therefore might become one. I was raised with a bit of extra background on most of the world's great music, so I shouldn't be surprised most people don't idolize Ravi Shankar the way I do. Most of them don't *get* Xavier Cugat either. But I think the precise moment I grew to love the sitar was actually in the car on a road trip after choosing Sgt. Pepper from my dad's Beatles collection and listening to "Within You Without You" repeatedly. The lyrics still resonate with me as they did then:
We were talking-about the space between us all
And the people-who hide themselves behind a wall of illusion
Never glimpse the truth-then it's far too late-when they pass away.
We were talking-about the love we all could share-when we find it
To try our best to hold it there-with our love
With our love-we could save the world-if they only knew.
Try to realise it's all within yourself
No-one else can make you change
And to see you're really only very small,
And life flows within you and without you.
We were talking-about the love that's gone so cold and the people,
Who gain the world and lose their soul-
They don't know-they can't see-are you one of them?
When you've seen beyond yourself-then you may find, peace of mind,
Is waiting there-
And the time will come when you see
we're all one, and life flows on within you and without you...
