So I finally went and got my driver's license today. Not that I'll be using it much, just something good to have out of the way.
Saw my partner's ex on the way to the RMV. She made a point of glaring at me. I'm under the impression that she's just found out that he and I are together and has linked that to an incindent last year during which I bought her son a decorative chinese box at a tag sale because he wanted it very badly and she, in effect, told him they couldn't afford it. Whenever I see something like this happen that isn't obviously just a parent who doesn't think their kid needs another loud/messy/shortlived toy, I react the same way. I never meant for it to upset anyone... it's just that I remember seeing my father break down crying at times because he could barely afford to keep a roof over our heads, let alone buy us things on a whim... We depended on my grandmother for all our used clothes and foodstamps for our meals. There was no "spending" money,
not that they're necessarily that poor... just that any help took so much stress off of my father's shoulders, which was more of a gift to me than anything anyone could have given me.
Keep in mind that I didn't know at the time that this was my boyfriend's ex. I can't definitely say that I wouldn't have done it if I did know, but it would have been because my partner was around for a lot of the son's childhood and loves him deeply- not as a way of undermining his mother's authority.
I wish I could tell her that I never meant to hurt her or her son, but somehow I don't feel she'd be too receptive, which is understandable. She seems like a strong woman, and hopefully she'll realize that that doesn't mean she has to be hateful or hold grudges.
On a lighter note... after passing my driving test I took a long walk as penance for any driving I might be tempted into doing in the future. =p
I found lots of neat stuff along the side of the road, including some beautiful pieces of rusted metal, a clear blue marble, a penny (gotta save up for the sushi... gord that stuff's expensive), two hubcaps, and a pink plastic Smith College Campus Center armband thing that I figure I can use to censor out some boobies in a collage.
hooray for other people's trash!

I still hate driving though. Especially after moving to Australia and back...not sure I'll remember which side of the road to turn onto.....
I love your rat pictures. So adorable! The food dish one is the bestest. That poor rat. The first time I saw it, I was like "OMG as if snake food wasn't mean enough already, they're selling the rats in convenience packs?!"
I'm glad to be wrong about that one.
