What is with the celebrity baby obsession lately? Every gossip magazine jumps at the opportunity to report a new pregnancy announcement with huge pictures and captions on the cover. I don't give a crap about J.Lo's growing spawn or Britney's abused, neglected retards. It seems like, these days, there's a greater fascination for the mundane, fundamentally human aspects of celebrities in order to bring them down to earth for everyone else. And then there are the addiction/rehab stories. Does it make you feel better, Midwestern soccer moms? The old school Anglo-American approach seems to have been to cover up all flaws and keep one's image pristine while in the spotlight so that only the highest respect and admiration would be bestowed. It was only after a given celebrity's death (ex: Mariliyn Monroe) that the dirt would come out. I'm wondering if the change is due to evolving memes in the collective public mind, such as disillusionment with distant pseudo-royalty and authority figures, and/or related to the increasing cultural mixing of this country. I know, for one, that Hispanics generally love their scandalous gossip (even the men). Everyone does to an extent, but I'm speaking in relative terms.
Mind you, I'm not a proponent of hiding one's flaws. I just think most of this recent magazine fodder is deadly boring. Give me some meat. At least my job gives me my meat...And, once again, I've said something that sounds totally wrong.
