Apparently, I'm a moron and somehow my video card had gotten unplugged. I plugged it back in, it started making weird noises, I installed the old, perfectly-working one, and now everything is fine. Well, with my PC anyways.
My weird Skype problem (would restart XP if it opened) was related to Sophos. My weird Vampire:Bloodlines issue was a Sophos thing too. And now my PC doesn't rattle (a bearing on the old video card's fan was going). Let's hear it for... me! w00t.
