THINGS! HOW ARE THEY? ANSWERS TO THESE AND OTHER, LESS PRESSING QUESTIONS!
things have been going very well here. the work atmosphere is fun and relaxed. co-workers are really chill. the office (imagine a local bank branch if you want to visualize it, because that's what the building used to be) is split down the center with a largish open area that serves as a sort of lounge. potted plants, a keyboard with sheet music for the music department, pool table. MPH Entertainment on one side, Cesar Millan, Inc. on the other, like trench warfare. bagels and assorted pastry parachuted in for breakfast every day, save friday. another, smaller lounge with couches for writing copy if you find your desk too cramped and oppressive. a room next door houses a free-to-play Rescue 911 pinball machine. my first day here, they handed me a supply book and told me to pick out a more comfortable chair and some basic office sundries. they take good care of us. case in point: HQ just did a flyby of the cubicles, dragging behind them a large banner which read "WHO LIKES SARAH SILVERMAN? RAISE YOUR HAND." I raised my hand and received bonus rations in the form of a 2 disc promo Sarah Silverman Program set For My Emmy Consideration. I'm not used to job perks, so I'm still bathing in the novelty.
as an assistant, the work load isn't tremendous, which has its high and low points. I came in last week just before a major deadline, so there was something to do every day, but that's done for little while. here I am, my first full monday at work, and I'm splitting my time fairly evenly between reading Othello, playing in Pandora and Netflix, apartment hunting, writing replies for photo requests on company letterhead, and researching conservation information on the Salton Sea. I have no complaints; I feel really lucky to have stumbled into such a great job, and one that affords me a certain amount of free time every day to get other important things done. but I kinda look forward to deadline days, when assignments will start trickling down to me.
and speaking on netflix and Othello, how many of you out there knew that there existed a 2001 Masterpiece Theatre adaptation starring Eamonn Walker and Christopher Eccleston? there's a pretty engaging clip of it up on youtube.

I also had no idea that Orson Welles directed a version of the play in '52, in which the Cannes promotional posters would have me believe he dressed in blackface. or else he's just got a really sweet tan.

oui, je suis intrigu.
