"It is because everyone under Heaven recognizes beauty as beauty, that the idea of ugliness exists. And equally, if everyone recognized virtue as virtue, this would only create fresh conceptions of wickedness.
For truly Being and non-Being grow out of one another."
yesterday my car needed an oil change. then it needed a new air filter. then new tires. then the brakes needed inspecting, and the brake lights needed replacing, and there was an electrical short in the gear shift light.
I got it home from the shop and the inside driver's-side door handle fell off.
it was looking like I was going to have to spend 400 dollars taking a final philosophy credit to receive my diploma. I couldn't take off work to visit my cousin in maryland for her graduation and take my aunt out for lunch. my boss was pissed at me for being late all the time.
so, that was yesterday.
this morning my professor e-mailed me to tell me that he'll accept my papers late to get me the credit I need to receive my diploma, stamped Spring '06. The mechanic feels bad for breaking my door handle and is going to install one for free. A co-worker offered to take my shifts this weekend so that I could drive up to maryland with my grandparents and take my aunt out to lunch. and without the abject, gutter-scraping misery that was yesterday afternoon, I wouldn't be enjoying such a deliciously transcendent sense of well-being this evening.
new books:
Descartes' Discourse on Method & Meditations
Selections from Aristotle
Selections from Socrates
The Analects of Confucius & The Tao Te Ching
Around the World in 80 Days
pick out something fantastic that's happened to you today. tell me about it.

My husband sometimes gets a thin, almost invisible white hair in the middle of his forehead. He hates it when I pluck it out for him.
