Life outside one's comfort zone

One of my favorite sayings is "Life begins outside your comfort zone." I don't know what blog this question would go under, so I'll post it here.

What is your most memorable experience outside your comfort zone?

Mine, I traveled to South Africa and Zimbabwe. I like traveling alone, so I can interact with the people from the country I'm in, and meet people. It's is the best way to learn. As someone who is white, not rich but comfortable, and not from the most ethnically diverse region, thus was eye opening and somewhat awkward. I felt uncomfortable with all the special treatment I got as a white foregnier. I didn't want to be condisending and belittling, but at the same time I didn't want to appear indifferent or spoiled. Even writing this I feel uncomfortable about word choice. I felt so out of place, and yet so alive. I was truly living, growing.

Please share, and let me know if there is a group this would fit.

@amra thanks for sharing.  I'm glad it was a good experience for you.  I imagine, for many of you girls, photo shoots are definitely out of your comfort zones.

I have traveled widely in many 3rd world countries and sometimes it is indeed outside my comfort zone, and often as you say, because i am aware that those around me are never quite 'comfortable' around me. (white, middle-class american).  but as far as "outside my comfort zone" - that would be having to lead 500 Buddhists in a 5 hour chant and pilgrimage - I just stepped into the temple to see what was happening, and - because i am older, they asked me if i knew the sutra they were chanting - i said yes, which was true - and so they put me at the front.  spent those hours leading by watching the guy behind me! eep!  -- but yes, living means movement, uncertainty, surviving means staying with what you (think you) know.... \
