two souls grown like vines
entwined
limbs and veins
up to the sky
around a tree that didn't bloom
this spring

today i cried
in tune with the songs
on my car stereo
the wipers flailed helplessly
i sang the funeral wail
of mothers who
have lost their children

who am i
to have mournful tears
glistening in
angelic choruses of sorrow
beneath clouds so perfect
reflected on my cheeks

i had a sacred gift
for seven years
until i grew careless
what can you say to god
once you have lost
such a thing?

today i was a boy
who woke alone
no one came when i cried
i found a depth i had forgotten
it was the music of the universe

i never understood before
how you and i are one
and everything i ever do
to hurt you or uplift you
i do to myself

where you see us as two
