Afro Samurai-
WOW! it's been awhile since i saw sum animation that blew me away, but Afro Samurai did just that. Its a show that debuted tonight on Spike TV, and has Samuel L. Jackson on as voice talent and producer, and RZA from Wu Tang Clan doing music, with anime production vets Gonzo doing the animation.. Its a simple enough story, as its about a child grown up to seek revenge on the man who killed his father. But with that simple premise, we get some amazing animation, and action scenes. The style is very much a more somber moody Samurai Champloo. The action is fluid and bloody, and by fluid i mean to say that the animation has a real flow to it, as fabric and hair(afros) flow and take on a life of their own. Its all very kinetic and just bursts with personality. The Characters are also pretty quirky, even with just an episode under the belt. Theres Afro Samurai, his sidekick of sorts Ninja Ninja(a very talky character that would seem to get annoying fast, but doesnt, as he does running commentary on a couple of Afros fights to hilarious aplomb). Theres also this freeky cultish group trying to take down Afro too, kind of an eastern influenced white trash bible belt revival tent feeling going on(busty scantily clad women included). All in all a very enjoyable and exciting show, with an interesting mythology and world being layed out(samurai swords and rocket launchers and cell phones in a desolate old west era looking desert backdrop). Fantastic stuff, and well worth checking out....
