So I've set this goal of seeing the 56 obscure & foreign films I havent seen on Film Comment's top 150 of the 2000s and I've already seen some doozies. I'm about a dozen in and here some of my faves thus far:
SILENT LIGHT (Carlos Reygadas - 2007)
A gorgeous transcendent film about a German Mennonite farmer struggling to stay faithful to his wife, despite the temptations of a lover.
YI YI (Edward Yang - 2000)
An epic and heart-wrenching Taiwanese movie that follows one middle class family over the course of a year. Quiet and understated, yet powerfully moving, Yang's film is a masterpiece. One of the greatest Chinese-language films ever made.
IN PRAISE OF LOVE (Jean-Luc Godard - 2001)
A rousing, polemical and political film about love, romance and history. Godard blends 35mm and video footage to create a sensual movie which is unabashedly about big ideas
