Part 3
I walked out alone into the grand ballroom. It was basically every high school prom flick you've ever seen playing out in front of me. Guys in rented tuxes, girls in thousand dollar gowns, lots of sequins, colored lights, and hanging crepe paper. The air reeked of hairspray, Drakkar Noir, and sweat. And it was walking into this scene that the acid finally hit. The theme of the prom was the 1970s, and while admiring a poster for GODSPELL, I noticed the colors all beginning to run into one another. The yellows turned into greens, then back, then forth again. "Umm, that's a little disconcerting", I muttered, pulling my eyes away, trying to focus them anywhere else. The melting color effect was now repeating itself throughout the dance hall. None of the colors were too extreme, so I was pretty much able to go with it at this point. Thank God the prom theme wasn't the 60's, like it was the year before. Looking at all those psychedelic colors probably would've made my head explode.
There you are!" Sarah and Emily came running over. They both were holding cups of soda. Suddenly very thirsty, I grabbed Sarah's cup and poured it into my mouth, managing to get most of it on my shirt. They both found this very amusing. I smiled also, noting the way their laughter jangled harshly and musically in my ears. I put on my 'everything's cool' face, acting like it was perfectly normal that I now seemed to possess the power to see all the words and music floating in the air. Sarah asked me to keep an eye on Emily, she wanted to go talk to some of her old teachers. She ran off, a flock of white shadows trailing after her. I reached out and grabbed Emily's hand. "Let's sit down. What do you say? Good? Good." I yammered, pulling her towards the tables and chairs.
After stumbling around and accumulating at least three years worth of dirty looks from my classmates, we managed to find a table with place cards stating that yes, indeed, Sarah and I were supposed to be sitting there. Emily took Sarah's seat, I collapsed into my own, trying not to stare at the vibrating tablecloth pattern for too long.
More coming soon...
