Part 7
It was around midnight now, so we drove out to the train tracks on the outskirts of town. We threw a blanket down on the grass and sat right next to the tracks as the 12:30 a.m. train rushed past us. We all yelled and howled at the loud metal beast roared past us. Sarah sat in my lap and I held her hand, my crush on Emily forgotten. We spent the rest of the night talking and laughing, taking the occasional hit of pot or swig of alcohol (yes, it turns out Emily did have a flask in her bag, the girl was clearly prepared for anything).
We all gradually dozed off as the sky began to lighten and go from black to purple, we managed to get a few hours of sleep before the 7:30 a.m. train brought us back to life.
My mom was out of town, so I brought them both back to my house to get some more sleep while I headed off to the Sunday morning shift at my restaurant job. A couple quick cups of coffee and I was feeling no pain. When my shift was over, I came home in time to see Sarah and Emily off, they both had to begin their final exams the next day.
"Did you expand your horizons?" Sarah asked me.
"Definitely. Whatever permanent damage you've caused, it was well worth it." I replied.
"You're so cute," she said, rubbing my peach-fuzz goatee with her thumb and forefinger.
I though about this for a minute. "I might get sick of doing this with you every week though, I mean, when we're together at college next year. Right, Em?"
"Oh shut up..." Emily muttered, climbing into Sarah's car. She seemed to have the worst hangover of any of us. I kissed Sarah goodbye, she reminded me she'd be back for the summer after finals were over in a few days. I shook Emily's trembling hand, wished her good luck on the exams, and watched as they pulled out of my driveway, headed back to school. I staggered into the house, downstairs to my room, flopped into bed, and didn't do anything else for a long, long time.
So here we are at the close of the story. I can't really see any message or moral to it, but endings never were my strong suit. I certainly wouldn't recommend our behavior to anyone, even if it all seemed like a good idea at the time. I think we all have a moments or two like that in our lives. All right, enough searching for meaning, let's cut the cord. Bye for now, behave until next time.
