feminism - belief in the social, political, and economic equality of the sexes.
thanks to social stereotypes, we get a bad rep among people who would probably call themselves feminists if only the werd could be stripped of its social connotations... perhaps the fact that a linguistic symbol depicting a movement of sexual equity is being expressed by a feminine rooted werd is more than a bit intimidating to many.
whatever the case may be, it's shocking how many people have asked me to define the term in the past week (including pertinent questions about the possible existence of male feminists,) but even more shocking were their radical mis-understandings of such a vague concept.
at least they asked for clarification... and i've successfully recruited a few male feminists.
