Well, the Magic Ravnica prerelease weekend was pretty fun, not without its difficulties. The first day I nearly missed the event, due to bad directions. When you dont know what exit of a subway station you are supposed to take, or youre in a country full of signs you cant read going to a building youve never seen before, the directions exit the subway here, walk 10 minutes (straight across the one intersection youll see) and youll be there are not good. I managed to get to the subway station from the local bus and get off at the right stop..but not knowing which way to go killed me. When I tried to get a cab, they dropped me off at a government building. Luckily, I at least copied down the number of the tournament organizer, and had the government people call the organizer. Then I got stupid lucky and one of the people in the office dropped me off at the building. So when I walked in and the guys from the group I usually play with saw me, I was pretty relieved.
The first tournament I did sort of ok. I won the first game, then lost the second two. And that would be the last round that I played in that was concluded. I forget who won the first game in rounds 2-4 (in round 2 I played one of the guys I usually play withI do believe I won the first game there), but the second game lasted till the end of the round each time. So I only got one pack as a prize, but the rare was fairly useful. Oh, and I got one of the new dual lands in my sealed deck pool (the starter and three boosters you get to play with), Overgrown Tomb. It was the only one I got out of all my prerelease cards, but it felt good to get one. I was the only one of my playgroup to get one the first day. The trip home was uneventful, I went back with a guy who lives close to where Im at so there wasnt any trouble at all.
Second day, first round, I got an awesome card pool to start with, tailor made for a B/U discard deckone of the rares was Circu, Dimir Lobotomist. Yeah, only the card I wanted to get the most that weekend, dual lands aside. The card pool was pretty good out of B/U alsobut we had to swap cards outand it was bye bye to Circu.
(side note: the art makes me think of Trent Reznor. I dunno why...but if there was ever a character that looked like him, this is it)
I did get Sisters of Stone Death in return, which to be fair won me a few games, but still, Circu is the new hotness. And in a limited environment? Please. Game over.
Round one was a draw. I won the first game, opponent the second. The last game, the judge came over and we had 5 turns left. If I had 1 more turn2nd to last turn, I hit him for 10, using his fliers that I stole with the Sisters. His turn, he casts a meaningless creature. Time. One more turn, I could have crunched him. I wish I had better memory of this round, I prolly fucked up where I could have been damaging him earlier.
Round 2 was a 2 game loss. My opponents deck had answers for all my threats, which didnt leave me with much to stop him or go on the offensive. At that point, I started wondering if getting back into Magic was a good idea and if I would just be wasting my money.
Round 3, I got my first official sanctioned event victory. Both games I got the Sisters out and proceded to steal my opponents critters until he conceded. Im wondering if the Sisters are going to be as good in constructed, Im guessing since it was a limited environment it was more reliable that I would get enough mana out to play a GBB4
Creature, and then the G/GB/B2 needed to steal a creature using the Sisters abilities. I forget when it happened that tournament, but my opponent was doing all he could to make one creature bigger, as Im laughing in my head knowing Im going to take it right away. I do so, he double takes, concedes.
1-1-1. Not a losing record.
Round 4, I forget how it went, but I won that as well. Can you call 2 wins a win streak? Feeling considerably better about my skills. I placed 18th, and thanks to the 2 wins I got 2 prize packs.
2nd tourney of the second day, opened a great card pool, had to give it up. Card pool I got sucked. I lost the first 2 games, and since it was about 6 at that point, I dropped and got my pack for that tournament. I did get the prerelease shirt for attending all 3 tournaments, as well as 3 promo Gleancrawlers. Make that 4 when I attend an American prerelease this weekend.
Iwon't even get into the horror that was getting back that night (the second night). Suffice it to say, I didn't recognize my stop, and got a tour of the entire route of the bus I was on.
I'll prolly post more about the event as I remember it...enough geekiness for one post ^_^.
