Right about now, the funk soul brother,
Check it out now, the funk soul brother,
I dont want to over hype it but the following is the most amazing thing Ive ever seen.
There is a music video directors series by Palm Pictures that contains the work of Michel Gondry, Chris Cunningham and Spike Jonze.
First, there is Michel Gondrys DVD. Clocking in a 300 min. of material. Hes worked with Beck, (Deadweight) Bjork (about 5 of them so far) , Radiohead (Knives out) , The Rolling Stones (Like a Rolling Stone) , The White Stripes, (Fell in Love With A Girl, you know, the Lego Video.), The Foo Fighters (Everlong) Cibo Matto (Sugar Water. The video is the same forward as it is backwards. Amazing.) As well as ones for his own band (he plays the drums) in the 80s called Oui Oui. (but let me warn you, theres a reason the band is no longer together.) He is the director of The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. He was also the the photographer for Dave Chappell's Block Party a few months ago. (Dave Chappell got the Fugees back together for this concert! Pray for him. WE need him.) There are also some of his excellent short films on the DVD. If you have a few hours youd like to spend in front of the T. V. I think its worth viewing. Its my most favorite of the three.
Then there is the work of Chris Cunningham. The shortest of the series at 200 min. Hes worked with Aphex Twin (Come to Daddy, well. pretty much all of his videos.) Madonna, Portishead, Bjork (All is Full of Love. considered his best work) and Squarepusher. Hes also done the special effect for a bunch of movies; Artificial Intelligence: AI, a few Alien movies. I know those movies sucked but the special effect were good. His videos are quite possibly the eeriest Ive ever seen. Hes been out of the game for a while but Ive see some of his unreleased work (RES screening from last journal.) and hes just as freaky as ever. Truth be told there isnt a lot of material on this one but what is there is pretty cool.
Last but not least: Spike Jonze. AKA Adam Spiegel as in Heir to the Spiegel Magazine fortune. Im surprised he and Sofia Coppola broke up (although she thanks him in the credits of both of her movies. Yup, Im a nerd.) seeing as they have so much in common. Actually its been said he a distant relative to the heirs but isnt one himself. (shrugs shoulders) Anyway hes not to be confused with Spike Jones. If you dont know who spike jonze is I have a lot of work to do. Hes worked with The Beastie Boys, Weezer, Fatboy Slim, The Pharcyde, Notorious B.I.G, Daft Punk, The Chemical Brothers (Elektrobank, Sofia makes an appearance as the dancer.) and.....(drum roll) Bjork. These are cool videos but youve seen most of them more than a few times. The best stuff is the documentaries and behind the scenes footage. The documentary on the making of Rockafella Skank is pretty funny but its the documentary Whats up Fatlip? that takes the cake. He talks to Fatlip, formerly of The Pharcyde, about what hes been doing. Hes living with his mother (and I think his son. I saw all of these about 6 months ago. Im going off the top of my head right now.) in a two bedroom apartment in LA. At least in 2003 he was. Lets hope he's doing better now. He got kicked out of the group because of drug abuse as well as other stuff. The best part is that hes telling some of these stories while in full on clown make-up. (for part of the video What up fat lip.) The best story is how he tells about the time he accidentally had his dick sucked by a transvestite. (THAT is the most amazing thing Ive never seen by the way.) Ive heard this story in a million movies, stories and whatnot but Ive never seen anyone say that it REALLY happened to him. Furthermore, hes a rapper (not that The Pharcyde were ever hardcore or anything but still.) Now thats keeping it real. This documentary was refreshing, sad and pretty fucking weird.
Can you believe i when through all this just to tell you that?
Anyway, although Spike has been out of the music video biz hes sort of back to his roots. His last three videos have been for Ludacris (Get Back) YYY (Y Control) and thats right.... Bjork. (Triumph of the Heart.)
In other news (Proof that Im a dork.) I googled my name a few days ago and found this article I wrote 3 years ago and I though to my self: Man, Maybe I should have gotten that degree in journalism. Ah, well. I also found this. It had nothing to with me but I like it.
Oh, Well.
i gotta go cause i got me a drop top, and if i hit the switch, i can make the asssss drop.
p.s.
You ma ask why I keep changing my picture. Well there is a logical explanation. You see....

traviscommeau:
i figured "stoic" was more of an adjective, as it generally applies to myselfs as well then again, it is strikingly similar to "hoek" from Ren & Stimpy... and that is certainly a last name...
