in 90 minutes i have to show a bunch of people i neither know or care for, a song that inspires me. the thing is, the only thing i get out of music these days is emotion, not inspiration. i've been listening to songs that make me happy or make me sad, or make me scream the words because i think they sound good.
not because they inspire me.
i don't really fancy telling these people "i love this song because every time i listen to it it makes me cry". i'm not letting strangers and dickheads in on how i feel.
what they want is an easy answer. "this song is good because it has a good guitar riff and it inspires me to play guitar gooder".
i have no easy answers. hence, i will pick a song that is musically complex, make something up, and appease their curiosity.
but why is one particular song inspirational?
i've gone through periods of being so into making music that my favourite bands would inspire me to be a better musician, to work harder, to be enthusiastic and to get to that ultimate goal of albums and shows and tours and fans. and blowjobs from groupies.
and then you have songs with a great message, that inspire you to be a better person, which might be a fitting thing considering the state of the world.
but i'm pretty selfish and don't care about too much at all.
which brings me to now, which was before mentioned, finding peace within myself through a particular piece of music because of the feeling given in the lyrics and the performance. because you can hear a shaky unease in the singers voice because they're pouring their heart out and going back to a place that made them so happy or so sad. because this is the music that i care most about now because it touches me more personally. not because it helps the world become a better place, or breaches musical barriers.
just because it makes me feel.
that said, i'm probably just going to pick something well produced, with good musicianship, and pieces that strike awe in someone when they hear it.
i'm so not telling them how i REALLY feel.
not because they inspire me.
