I'm not sure if this is quite geeky, dorky, square, or nerdy- but I'll answer the blog homework about the geekiest thing about me for @rambo @lyxzen and @missy, with some good ol' fashioned ranting-
Today, while applying my daily winged eyeliner, I caught a glimpse of the cruelty free mark which prompted a very Lisa Simpson meets Julia Sugarbaker-esque moment that I can't seem to shake. I find it very odd that "Cruelty Free" and "Fair Trade" even have to exist... I find it difficult to understand that they are exceptions to a norm of cruelty, slavery, and torture of both humans and animals- YET, such things as cruelty free, fair trade, american made, and local are still stigmatized as being yuppie-ish, granola fever-marketing ploys. Since when are yuppies the only ones to care about the most basic human rights- Don't Enslave, Don't Exploit,Don't Torture, Don't Kill? It seems so freakin' obvious it's upsetting, but then again- marriage wasn't legal between two loving, consensual adults of the same sex in all 50 states of "the land of the free" until a few days ago!
The fact is, we would shudder if we saw someone strike a dog on the street, but 65,000 dogs and 20,000 cats are subjected to medical torture every day in this the country of Lassie, Wishbone, Snoopie and Shiloh! AND, we would never accept the enslavement, abuse, and murder of children by our next door neighbors for labor... but 26% percent of tens of millions of the worlds slaves are children under 18.
So in conclusion: I am proud to be a feminist, a vegetarian, and a humanitarian geek because our world still does desperately needs- The Civil Rights Movement, Feminism, and Modern Day Abolitionism.
Much Love from the Geek Goddess of Lectures and Wagging Fingers,
Hypatia
Sidenote: I was overjoyed to see that my SGMerch is Made in America, I have a veeeeeery geeky habit of always checking tags to see where clothes are made and buying American made or used as much as humanly possible.
