Hahaha, problem solved -- albeit in a rather inconvenient way. I "borrowed" an older copy of Visual Studio from a peer-to-peer network, and I'm now able to work with it in window-based programming. However, the older version doesn't seem support standard C++ libraries as well as my current one does... so I have to keep copying stuff between the two versions (installed on two different computers) to get my shit working the way I want it to.
But at least it's working now.
Oh, and *ahem* T MINUS TWELVE HOURS! Going with my sister and my mom tomorrow (OK, technically today) to see THE FLICK. Oh yeah, I'm ready for this. w00t!!!

About Linux and/or BSD: Definitely, a separate drive is a good way to go... you just can't trust MS products to respect the foreign parts of the drive. Personally, I avoid MS products altogether, but I'm lucky in having no commercial or other constraints pushing me to use them.
