Okay for the second time today I am going to attempt to write this blog entry.
Yesterday I was asked what I would do if I ever won the lottery. At the time I really didn't have an answer for my friend b/c frankly I'm at a place in my life where I don't really want "things", sure I'll be moving shortly and will need to buy furniture and shit.. but that doesn't really qualify for things I would buy with lottery money. After thinking about it for the night I came up with some appropriate options for what I would do with some moneys, ranging from something I could reasonably afford as soon as I get a job.. to the absurd and will certainly need to win the lottery to make it happen.
That being said here are a few things I would like to experience in life, which is what I would do with the money vs. buying a bunch of "stuff" (on a side note, I definitely like buying "stuff" but I'm currently fulfilled in that category)
1. Zero G is a company that operates out of Texas and is the only FAA approved company to provide a zero gravity experience within the confines of a modified and gutted 747 jet. The zero gravity experience is generated by putting the jet through a series of parabolic ascents and decents over the course of the flight, the total length of time at zero g you get for the $5000 price tag is around 5 or 6 minutes. Worth it? Yeah totally.. if I won the lottery I would probably find a way to do this monthly. What a cool fucking experience that must be! $5000 is totally worth it to me, in fact I plan on doing it fairly soon, within a year of starting a job now that I've finished my masters.
2. Yesterday Virgin Galactic revealed Eve, their suborbital flight luncher to the public. Eve, also known as White Knight Two is a heavy lift, all carbon fiber dual cockpit plane which will be used to lift the Virgin Galactic sub-orbital craft to a height of 45 thousand feet above ASL where it will be released and carry passengers and crew across the boundary where Earth ends and space begins. Passengers will be able to see the curvature of the Earth and will experience weightlessness. The first series of flights will cost around $200,000 per seat. Hefty price tag? Sure.. but is it worth it? Hell yeah.
3. In the last 8 years 7 people have hitched rides to the International Space Station and have become the first "space tourists". The cost for such an experience, starting with a rocket ride into space, and all inclusive 10 day stay at the luxurious ISS spa and sweets ranges between 10 and 20 million USD. Expensive? Yeah.. about 20 times the cost of a Virgin Galactic sub-orbital flight, but in my opinion it would be worth every penny. To be among only a handful of people to have ever gone into space, look down on the Earth from above and live in space for 10 full days..if/when I win the lottery I'd hand over the 10 mil in a fucking heart beat.
These are the only things I could think of that I would spend lottery style money on and in time I imagine these concepts will go from luxuries for the ultra rich to something more reasonable for the rest of us. But if I win the lottery tomorrow you can bet I'll be sending these guys checks shortly there after because I really can't think of a better want to spend that kind of money.
