This has been the oddest week, no questions asked.
Last day of classes was this past monday, since then my ability to do lab work has diminished exponentially. I probably haven't had such an unproductive week since last semester. On tuesday night some serious drama went down in our department, the details of which really bother me. While i was not directly affected this specific incident, i am still bothered by it b/c in the year i've been in the department this isn't the first time something like this has happened, and it could conceivably happen again in the future. If this does happen, and happens to my lab, I potentially stand to be affected by it substantially.
Wednesday was a good time, a fellow grad student hosted a mini BBQ where she provided food (vegi friendly even) and beers for everyone. When i finally get to live in my apartment when in early June, after I get back from a month long trip in NYC, I plan to do something similar for my friends here.
Thursday I was treated to a really awesome show. A good friend of mine invited me to go along, and i had just an awesome awesome awesome time!!!
Friday was fun, also a bit stressful, but fun in the end. The short story; I get paid by a part of my school called the research foundation. Its not like a normal job where you get hired and start getting paid (salary) until you get fired. Instead you get appointed for specific periods of time, generally corresponding with semester start/stop dates. So my last appointment ended May 1st, and was supposed to start May 2nd and run until i leave for NYC in mid May, then start again when i get back. Instead of this happening my professor decided to change the dates on me, and not tell me about it. I ended up asking him about my appointment dates randomly and found out they were changed, meaning no pay check next week. (Here is the condensed part of the story) So naturally i got stressed, but someone in the office was really really awesome and was able to help me out, we filled out the right paperwork and got it to the right person in the HR department before he left for vacation and I will end up with a paycheck next week.
Friday night I went to a break dancing documentary and after party. Movie was just awesome, it was such a good documentary. At the after party I saw a bunch of school people, and even flirted with a really cute girl, whos number i got!! can you believe that? I certainly can't.
I'm in the lab today to do what i thought was going to be a lot of work, turns out I was wrong. Instead I just ended up trying to fix the faulty system again by using epoxy. So now i have to wait until tomorrow to see if it worked or not, my options are really getting slim here as i need to produce some kind of results by monday.
How has your weekend been?
