I believe Im due for an update.
This may be a three part update due to the fact that it has been too long and Ive realized (with Billy Ngos help) that I have to write some more. The last update was when I was barely starting out at my internship at NiteGuide Magazine.
Part 1
NiteGuide Magazine
SPOILERS! (Click to view)
Since Ive graduated the only thing stopping me from obtaining a degree is an internship. Not only did I get 1 return email from employers, I got three. The first one that replied to my emails was Myclubscene.com which is an internet social networking website for the nightlife. I had to quickly get an interview. On the day of the interview, I was asked to go interview a band called Speaker Junkies. I accepted and interviewed that band along with another that night. The article was published on the first issue.
The second band I interviewed the same night was Non P. They were an interesting band that I was able to talk to that night, but I wont go into the details. NiteGuide asked me to write another article for this band for their second issue. I proceeded to write the article and turned it in. About a week after, they emailed me saying
Hey Hung, we will not be using this article as the manager went over it and wants to write it himself as a lot has changed with the group. There is specific information he would like to publish and he is being very picky. Its easier if he writes it.
That is what they wrote to me word for word. As a journalist this strikes me as odd, unethical even. Im not trying to bad mouth this magazine because its a new one, but to let the group youre supposed to be writing about let them write for themselves, youve got to be kidding me. How does one call them a magazine?
EDIT: I drove myself to Cypress College to ask my old journalism professor, Professor Mercer if this was really ethical or not. He said it isnt unethical, but its just not nice. I should bring it up to them and tell them they shouldve been clearer in directions. NEVER TRUST YOUR EDITOR! Remember that?
Part 2
The life behind a KROQ intern
SPOILERS! (Click to view)
I had numerous replies to my emails Ive sent out. The most notable were, the first as stated above and the following two: KROQ and X-play from G4. X-play never replied with an email when I told them when I was available for an interview. They only replied with a We are working with scheduling, please bear with us. On the other hand however, I had an interview with KROQ.
On with the interview! As I was waiting at the KROQ studios, a girl came in for an interview; and as I was waiting, a girl was leaving the interview. Competition! As the other girl was leaving, Dave the King of Mexico greeted me and brought me into the room. Kevin, Miss Cleo, Dj Omar, Alex were waiting for me. I walked into a group interview. Group interviews usually are not good for me. Ive gone through them; AMC, IKEA were some off the top of my head, I dont have a nametag from each of those places.
Cutting the story short, I was hired as an intern. As I update this blog that doesnt seem to get finished anytime soon, I am currently in the third week. Today (Feb. 4), I heard myself on the radio for the first time. Lets just say I was to the point and exact and not very personable. It was the combination of nervousness and still waking up. I get this from Kevin, Hung, youre the black hole of energy. You suck up all the energy in the room. I find all of this really amusing because Im usually not one to be quiet. I bet you just go crazy once noon hits dont ya? Ralph would ask me. I should come to the intern loaded with a shit ton of energy drinks and theyll get a run for their money!
Part 3
Suprise Vacation
SPOILERS! (Click to view)
About two weeks ago Andy (Despairxfaction) asked me to go with him to Visalia. Fuck it, what the hell? We went, it was 4 hours away from Orange County. For what reason? To meet up with some guildies! We both play this game calledWORLD OF WARCRAFT! Im in this guild called Peanut Butter Yeti Time! There were two guildies at the house and two former guildies. Everyone was awesome. Its a total house full of dudes. For the most part of the trip though, I was sleeping. Andy has some pictures and lets say it includes ass and shit getting piled on me. The trip all in all was relaxing and worthwhile because sometimes getting away maybe for a day or two is good.
On a side note we passed this gas station with the most epic name ever. GAS WAR! On the way home we had to go to it, pictures posted later perhaps.
