Our barn burned down tonight.
It was caused by the heat lamps we had set up for our boys. Pinto Beans died in the fire. Higgins is at the hospital with burns over about 9% of his body. He has a good chance of survival, barring infection and complication. We really won't know much for 24 hours.
It's such a shame. Beans was such a sweet boy. He didn't deserve to die that way. Apparently he wrapped himself around the pole his line was tied to and couldn't get far enough away from the fire. A neighbor tried to get him free, as did a couple of the fire fighters, but the fire was too hot for them. Higgins was on a longer cable and didn't get wrapped around the post, so the fireman was able to free him.
We lost alot of stuff in the barn... my paintings, all my tools, furniture, my jet pack leaf blower, our bicycles.
I went to bury Beans, but then I realized my shovels were all burned in the fire, so the firemen had shovels and helped me dig the grave. I have a new appreciation for our VFD. Those guys were so sympathetic. They wouldn't let me dig but I made them give me a shovel. It was my damn dog ya know? Poor Boney Roney. I wish I coulda been there for him.
We were at work. I was on the cook line. You never expect that call - "Mr. Huggle? I'm sorry to inform you but, blah blah blah... How soon can you be here?" I just went out back and bawled for 10 minutes after that. Fortunately, my Pop was there eating with my Grandparents. He came outside to see what was going on, then he hugged me. Then I had to tell HoneyBaby and cry some more, then run home, in shock myself, and take care of Higgins (he had crawled under the walkway to the back door and hid, trembling, in shock and terrified). Then I buried Phoney Balogna.
C'est l'vie.
We'll be OK.
R.I.P. Pinto Beans
He was a mere 13 months, and such a sweet, sweet boy. I will miss him, but not as much as Higgins will.
