Just back from a quick weekend trip to NY to get a fix of culture and music. One of the great things about living near Philadelphia is that it's so close to New York and Washington DC. This trip I spent much time wandering about Greenwich Village, which is always fun, even if the weather was a bit on the chilly side. Friday night I found a cool tapas bar and hung out there for a bit. Then somehow I ended up with the best table in the house at Village Vanguard, to see and hear Branford Marsalis and his trio perform an amazing set of jazz. It was my first time seeing him live and it was well worth the trip. He was honestly about 6 feet away from me much of the time.
Saturday was spent mostly wandering, including trips to Starbucks, Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), Utsav for an Indian buffet lunch, World Trade Center to see the new building (simply an amazing sight), Keens Chophouse to satisfy my carnivore instincts, and back to The Village and a little place called Zinc Bar to hear Marianna, a Brazilian vocalist and her band. That was really fun. The second set (of three) finished at about 1 am, and that was late enough for me. But I did stand up and dance a bit, and the audience all got beads. :) Wishing I lived in NY, instead of just visiting.
Oh well, back to a normal Monday.
