Hello everyone who's been waiting breathlessly for an update!
Edited to add: I just found out that I didn't get the job in Singapore.
I'm back from my trip to Singapore (Philadelphia to Chicago to Hong Kong to Singapore for 5 nights, then to Tokyo and Washington DC and back to Philly). Whew! It was certainly a long damned time to sit in a plane, even with stopovers. But I'm so glad I had the opportunity to go there.
The weather was hot and humid - as one would expect near the equator, and although it rained a bit almost every afternoon or evening, this was considered the dry season there. The whole island is only about 10 by 25 miles and the city has over 4 million people, but it was surprisingly green, filled with trees and shrubbery and flowers. The food was amazing - a wonderful variety with tons of Chinese, Indian, Malaysian and other ethnic restaurants. And the food normally comes very spicy - unless you specifically ask for less (or more). It was heavenly.
Alcohol was expensive - due to government sin taxes, but that didn't stop me from enjoying some Tiger beer or a few microbrews while I was wandering about. [See my latest photo album.]
I was there for a job interview, and also had a guided orientation session with a relocation company and a realtor showing me apartments and condos. They were quite expensive at the moment, nothing like the housing market in the US right now. In fact, the whole economy in Singapore is just booming. So hopefully, if I'm lucky enough to get the job, it will pay well enough that I can get a reasonably nice apartment, for when my SG friends come to visit.
Oh, the nightlife was also fun. There is a nice touristy but fun area along the river. Lots of places to eat and drink, inside or outside. Dancing was apparently all indoors. And I think the women there were quite pretty. What their opinion of me was, I hate to ask.
I think I would enjoy being there for a few years. It would be awesome to explore Asia and Australia for weekends or longer vacations. Wish me luck!
