Back on Memorial Day weekend I went to Seattle's Museum of Flight where one of the few remaining airworthy B17 bombers had stopped on tour. It was very interesting. I also took the tour through the plane. For such a large aircraft it was surprising how cramped it was inside
Since my Dad was a B17 pilot during World War II it had a special meaning to me. He told me about his expreiences when I was a kid which inspired me to earn a Private Pilot's license when I was 19.
B17 Aluminum Overcast
The ball turret is on the underside of the plane. The gunner was in this small space with his knees pulled up to his chest There were two 50 caliber machine guns just inches from his head. It was considered the worst position of the crew.
