What an exciting and bizarre week we have had....
Traveled to mother fuckin Cincinnati since I donned the digi camo... sadly realized that she has gotten even more vibrant and beautiful than when I first fell in love with her. We came for the Oktoberfest and stayed for the good company. After a 9 hour drive on Friday, we went straight to the Haufbrauhause (I just misspelled that, didn't I?) and got perfectly shitty with a bunch of ol' CCMers.
Saturday, we awoke early and ran about town, pretending to be locals again. Of course I went to Whole Foods. Of course I bought beer and cheese. Of course I about cried when we drove past our old house. I can't help this shit. I love that fuckin city. Then we went back to our wonderful hostess' house to eat her breakfast casserole, which was fuckin phenomenal. We attended the keg tapping at noon on fountain square and then snatched a table by an oompa band. We all shot the shit while drinking out of giant beer steins. Took out the djarum blacks and our new friends took them without much prompting. A parade passed by and I literally jumped on into it and asked a German brass band if I could play their instruments if I supplied my own mouthpiece. They were thrilled to give me the chance. Love it! The alphornist I harassed later was not so gracious. (dude, I'm classically trained.... I've played horns worth more than very nice cars, I'm gonna take care of your fuckin ridiculous alphorn.) We were so beat after our long day int he sun that we literally went to a public park and passed out in the grass. That was a first. And a bug bit me on the forehead.
On Sunday... shit, what did I do? I think we ate another casserole. Ate leftover indian food. Umm... went to Ault park and missed my old glory days of loading a huge bowl and exploring the city. (in cadence now... the army life is not my styyyle....) We went to Arthurs with our hosts and ate their fried cheese (my favorite food!!!) and burgers. Graeters ice cream afterwards. Homebrew tasting later. Good night. We bought a record player during the day for 85 dollars. It is bad ass. Tha's all that can be said.
Monday we went to first watch for brunch. Dicked around in the gateway quarter. Got Deweys pizza for supper and ate in on the Kentucky side of the Ohio, just to watch the city wind down. I about cried as I watched the sun set over the city that I love so much. cincinnati is truly something special. really. Had a beer or two or a pitcher on the Beer Sellar barge and then, found out that my french horn friend was throwing a party at his house to celebrate the CCM horn auditions being over. Went to his house, reunited with a bunch of old pals and met some new ones. We laughed our asses off and told lots of stories. The lineup for the new year was announced during the party (online) and people were excited. Went out to the porch and watched my friends pass a bowl.... I miss weed. Our hostess drove us home. Thanks, pretty lady.
The next day I awoke early to get the car ready so that Z could sleep in... we were very hungover (well, I was still quite drunk.) We drove back to Ft Monroe and after being mauled by the lonely cat, cooked a delicious meal.
I thought that the trip to Cinci would re energize me but it left me feeling deflated and lonely. This area is really getting me down. I miss the life of my old town. I miss dressing up as someone new everyday and going out.
To quote the wonderful Hawksley Workman:
"It's killing, killing, killing us. It's killing, killing, killing us. the city is a drag. the city is a drag."
In other, wonderful news....
I feel like I'm in love with all the right people. Yeeeeessssss.....
