Grrr... long entry eaten when I accidentally refreshed the page. Here we go again
Listening to: Isole - Wearemonster (if you're into ambient/electronic music, it's most entertaining!)
My hours have been cut back at the restaurant this past week or two. I'm not entirely sure if it's been a conscience decision on the chef's part, or if perhaps it's been because we've been better prepared for the lunch rushes. I used to work every day from 11:30am until around two (or sometimes three) in the afternoon. Then, because split shifts are so awesome (/sarcasm), I always had to come back around five to work through the dinner rush as well.
Split shifts are great for the restaurant. Because our working hours are broken into two smaller portions, they dont have to pay us for any sort of break.
With the addition of our new chef, a lot of the positions have been restructured to be more efficient. New positions were opened on the day-team (prep team) so that extra people could get everything properly prepared in the morning. The manpower seems to be paying off, allowing us split cooks to leave earlier (because were no longer needed for the extra portioning/prep work that is already taken care of). My hours as of this week are 12-1:30 (and then I dont have to come back in the evening until six). Longer afternoons and less work feels good
The changed hours, however appealing, could be a bad sign though. As I work less and less, newer people are being brought in to move up the line and take the positions on the day team that Ive been asking for. (Its happened a second time since when I first mentioned I was frustrated.) Unfortunately, I believe the chef has grown a certain disliking to me. Im usually the first to hold him accountable when something like his prep for the day isnt completed properly, or when he refuses to wear a hat on line while expecting us to still follow code.
So am I losing hours because were being more efficient as a team? Or is it because someone up top is growing tired of me? I can only speculate
But like I said, Im not really complaining either way. The new guy that they just brought to the day team is an excellent cook, and even if hes only been there about three weeks (as opposed to my ten months), its no longer my place to worry about it. PLUS, I have all this wonderful time in the afternoon to enjoy summer! To do laundry! To write resumes and start looking for a better job!
So getting off the rather dull subject of work
Summer is finally here! Canada Day (Friday, July 1st) is not only our countries birthday, but it also marks one year since I moved to Victoria. The country isnt the only thing getting older soon either. During the coming few weeks, myself and at least four or five other people I know will also be celebrating birthdays.
And as for today Ive been using my afternoon to do some reading and write this long entry (twice now). I plan to go downtown for a little bit before I have to go back to work too. I need to find a place that will print off my resume that Ive polished up so nicely, and I need to start thinking more seriously about what sort of job Im going to beg for.
Oh. Its also Wednesday, so anyone can find me at Hugos tonight for Mod Night.
(I feel like my writing was terribly sloppy this time around so please excuse any errors on my second draft here)
