so here is my horrible sad story.
since december I have been all geared up to move in with a friend, because my roomie informed me that he wanted to move closer to his school at the end of our lease. This would mean signing a new lease to get his name off of everything, and another year in my pretty pretty apartment. New roomie was so excited, because he loves to cook and I have the greatest kitchen ever.
It came time for old roomie to give his notice to the landlord, and for me to inform him I am staying but with a new tenant. The landlord instructed us to give him a written notice of termination of the lease, we obliged. At this point I gave new roomie one last chance to back out for any reason at all, it didn't matter and I wouldn't be mad. He asked me if I was crazy, because of course he was moving in.
I pushed him to find a job so he would have an employer reference for the landlord. A task which would be simple for him, because he has over five years of solid experience as a cook in fine resturants. he procrastinated... then made the decision to stop attending his classes and switch schools to enter a culinary program, I supported him. This new school after all is halfway to next door to the apartment... but still no job.
Mr landlord calls and asks for a second co signer this time around. I am furious because I had just completed a year lond lease with only one cosigner and no late/bounced cheques. I ask new roomie if his mom can, she agrees.. and we all just kind of grumble about how stupid my landlord is. The landlord then doesn't return my phone calls for over three weeks while I try to arrange a time to sign the new lease.
He's where everything falls to bits.
Tuesday night I was finishing up the last of my projects to hand in the next day, I message new roomie and he's says everythings cool and we chat for a bit. Then he says "oh yeah, my moms not cosigning" we chat about what can be done about it for the rest of the night, I don't sleep.. I get up in the morning and call the landlord, no answer. So I wonder around toronto getting things finished for my very last projects to be handed in that afternoon then take a break at a second cup. I have a message on my phone, it's the landlord, I promptly call him back.
He asks for three months DEPOSIT ontop of first months rent which is totally Illegal. I say it's impossible, no one has 4000 dollars just lying around. He tells me of this crazy senario he has in my head about how new roomie is going to bail three months into the lease, and myself and my father (the co signer) will decide to pay only half the rent and mr landlord will get totally screwed. I tell him thats crazy, he hims & haws and says he'll think about it, and he has to see what he can legally "demand" from me. He is a lawyer, btw.
I call my dad bawling, he's furious brian is being such a dink TWO WEEKS before the end of the month. I have no idea what to do. I call new roomie.
He's a total ass and wonders why I don't just move in with my boyfriend because it'll solve "everyone's problems" failing to think that clearly greg and I would have talked about this and decided it was a bad idea otherwise we would probably be living with eachother. I tell him he needs to get a job this weekend. he's like yeah whatever.
I get my projects handed in, everything is okay. I spend wednesday/thursday hanging out with shai and her boy I inform my cute as a button neighbors the situation they are pissssssssssed cause they hate the landlord to, they tell me 2/6 of the OTHER apartments are going to be empty shortly as well, and if I lose mine that'll make half, so he'd be dumb to kick a paying tenant out. This sets off alarms in my head because so many people hate this man.
When I wake up on Good friday I start looking for rooms. Then we get a call, gregs grandmother (who he lives with) is being rushed to the hospital, we wait all day for news... she may have had a stroke. My dad & step dad pop in, dad points out that if his own mother doesn't trust him, why should we. I agree. I cry a little more.
I talk to my lovely southern co-worker, who needs a roommate, but her lease isn't over for another two months, she lives in a bachelor. we talk about it all day and I decide to stay with her for at least part of the week and pay her rent so that I can keep my job, she lives right beside the store. Old roomie agrees to take care of my kitties while I am 1/2 homeless, and I bawl my eyes out for putting them through all this. Greg secures space to store my furniture, bed, and stuff in his basement. I'll only have the clothes I can carry.
Saturday morning "new roomie" calls me. He's fucking off on me and taking a job in MOTHERFUCKING ALBERTA.
I never want to speak to him again.
my landlord still won't return my phone calls.
so if you have a couch I can crash on and you live in downtown toronto... gimmie a little hand next month? I'll be fun and I'll make you a yummy meal in return. or buy you flowers.
Now I am on an insane packing spree because I need to get out of my place in just under two weeks. I want to die.
