the 7th we had out first mostly full lab day. We arrived at the lab just before 9am and had enough time before our BSL 2 lab training to learn how to sort some mosquitoes for the westnile mosquito tracking project. I will be helping out with that project whenever I'm waiting for my DNA processing stuff to go through. After the safety training we had a dual lab meeting with the veterinary parasite research lab. Between the two labs there are 4 different Chagas related research projects going on. There is also a fireant/tick/prairie chicken relationship study, a limes disease study and another mosquito born pathogen study that I can't remember the details (there was a lot of information to take in) The Graduate student that I am going to be working under is leaving for Ecuador next week so there is going to be a short amount of time to study under her. After the meeting we had a submeeting to discuss our field trip next week. Then headed into the vet lab for a quick tour where I saw my first kissing bug. Then back to the westnile lab where we sorted more mosquitoes.
There was an REU pool party that was mostly nondescript. Played volleyball horribly with the engineering REU. Called Ben and talked for 2 hours until I started to fall asleep, it was so nice, I really miss that guy.
