This week's homework assignment from @missy and @rambo is "favorite holiday movies"!!!
I fucking love the holidays you guys. I am an animist, an anthropology nerd, and a general pagan.I know, it doesn't necessarily go hand in hand with jumping up and down and donning holiday sweaters or singing along to classic carols in a warm car whilst scoping out Christmas lights. That being said, I just can't help it. I guess, at my core, I am a sucker for love. Not specifically romantic love, but that broad platonic human to human connection.
This season is one that reminds us to be kind, it exposes the best parts in our nature, the parts that say "I don't need this spare change as much as this stranger on the street" or "I wonder what I could do to make someone less fortunate feel a little bit more loved today?''. It's a time of introspection and a time for family, and that warms me to my core. also...who doesn't love hot cocoa and cheesy light displays!?!?
Any how with out further adieu, here for your consideration are my favorite holiday films!!!
1. DIE HARD.
I know what you are thinking...maybe, "but Hephaestus, that isn't a Christmas movie??"
To which I will say I disagree with you wholeheartedly! It is literally about a dad trying to make it home on Christmas, yes, admittedly, He is fighting terrorists, but isn't that more interesting than some blizzard stopping his flight home? I think so.
Not only that, but this film displays some serious holiday movie tropes. The greedy(one might even say grinch like?) villain!
"It's Christmas Theo, its the time of miracles"!!!
2. Love Actually
Okay, not only does this movie feature the late great Alan Rickman (always...) but YOU GUYS this is also one of the best movies ever. hands down. I don't even feel it is necessary to explain it. If you have not seen it, I implore you, grab some hot cocoa, bundle up, set your masculine ego and your ideas about chick flicks down by the door, and have a good long watch. You will not be disappointed, I solemnly swear! (did you catch that harry potter reference? *wink wink*)
3. A MOTHERFUCKING CHRISTMAS STORY.
Y'all!!!! Do I even need to rant about this one?? I feel as if it is on of the most beautiful relate-able comedies in the modern era. Everyone who has ever been a kid or a parent can find some gleaning example of kinship, of our own childhoods displayed in this fantastic knee slapping Christmas adventure. Period. The knowledge of human nature behind every action is pristine and noteworthy. I love love love this movie!!!
If you stuck through this whole rant, I appreciate you! I felt as if I should definitely whittle it down to my top three Christmas movies as I actually really really love a lot of them. I also really hope this list encourages all of you nay sayers to consider the cold hard facts about die hard being a Christmas flick as well.
What are some of you guys' favorite holiday movies? I would love to know!!
xoxo
Hephaestus
