Smitten
Copyright 2023 by Michael Walker
I met her in high school
She was working at Aldi's
And it didn't take long
'Til we were smitten
We'd drive down to Piedmont
Where there was a stone quarry
And we kiss in the moonlight
We were so smitten
Now I'd like to know
Where we are today
And I'd like to know
Who I am tonight
Same old quarry and the same moonlight
But everything has really changed
I went off to Basic
And she'd write me these letters
And I 'd sit there and read 'em
We were so smitten
She came up to see me
When I graduated
And I held her forever
We were so smitten
Well I'd like to know
Where we are today
And I'd like to know
Who I am tonight
Those aren't RPGs
They're just fireworks
And everything has really changed
Well I'd like to know
Where we are today
And I'd like to know
Who I am tonight
We just sit here and we watch TV
And she's so very very far away
Why can't I let her in?
Why do we fight so much?
After all we were so smitten
Why can't I tell her about
The nights that I dreamed of her
After all
We were so smitten
The children are angels
And I love them so
We go to the ocean
And it's great to be home
But she wants a man I left
In a drop-off zone
And he ain't ever ever comin' back
