wow, a tell tale sign of where priorities are. in New York State, the legislators are proposing more program cuts...to health care and education. since I'm a substitute teacher, I'm a member of NYSUT (New York State Teachers Union). don't ask me what the acronym stands for. one article has a sign of where priorities are...
in 2009, according to the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy, here's the break down of income and percentage paid (with the temporary tax increase percentage in parenthesis):
$16,000-$33,000: 10%
$33,000-$56,000: 11.6%
$56,000-$95,000: 11%
$95,000-$209,000: $10.7%
$209,000-$633,000: 10.8% (11.1%)
Over $633,000: 7.2% (8.4%)
so the state is in a budget crunch, and legislators want to extend a tax break to wealthiest 3%. guess we need to cut programs that help those in need (let's say those making $33,000 or less, you know, the ones paying 10% of their income to taxes) while cutting the taxes on those paying 7.2% to 8.4% in taxes...huh?
