I stood outside metrodome on a cold windy november day in 1987, all of seven years old with my dad, who had suprisingly takin me out of school for the day... to watch him, number 34 in my heart, television, and bedroom wall, ride around in a convertible larger than life, adorning a giant fur coat to keep warm...I remember shaking his hand...
and as if things couldn't get any better, he gave me and more importantly minnesota another championship 4 years later, sweeping up our hearts with frivolous pagaentry again....
Now I know some think sports are trite....but not to a 7 year old, or for that fact an 11 year old, who eats, sleeps, and dreams sports....or more importantly baseball
no....sports are never trite when all things are possible, only misunderstood, just as they are unpredictably joyous as a grand reminder of the wills of the human spirit....and for me and my life, celebrated... as he will remain, the little cherub from the south side of chicago, who will always be dearest
...as he will always define my pastime, he will always usher the minnesota spring captive, and he will always guard the eternal youth possessed by the boys of summer....laughing like a happy memory
Thanks Kirby.....
Well, beat the drum and hold the phone - the sun came out today!
We're born again, there's new grass on the field.
A-roundin' third, and headed for home, it's a brown-eyed handsome man;
Anyone can understand the way i feel.
Oh, put me in, coach - i'm ready to play today;
Put me in, coach - i'm ready to play today;
Look at me, i can be centerfield.
Well, i spent some time in the mudville nine, watchin' it from the bench;
You know i took some lumps when the mighty casey struck out.
So say hey willie, tell ty cobb and joe dimaggio;
Don't say "it ain't so", you know the time is now.
Oh, put me in, coach - i'm ready to play today;
Put me in, coach - i'm ready to play today;
Look at me, i can be centerfield.
Yeah! i got it, i got it!
Got a beat-up glove, a homemade bat, and brand-new pair of shoes;
You know i think it's time to give this game a ride.
Just to hit the ball and touch 'em all - a moment in the sun;
(pop) it's gone and you can tell that one goodbye!
