Dont Cry Dont raise your eyes .. Its only teenage wasteland. The Who, Baba O Reilly
Chapter the Fifth, Oxford, Monday
Tim is in the class for what turns out to be the last time in the Oxford program. This is quite tragic in that there are still one and a half weeks in the 4 week program. Including a 3 day trip to London on Wednesday to Friday this week.
His thoughts run quicker and he tells Huxtable, and the Oxford head of things ex-full bird Colonel James Aldous Holmes, about his decision to not attend the formal dinner tonight. The two seem quite bewildered. Col. Holmes, who was highly respected when he was a major player for Britian in NATO, seems quite confused. At this point, I think he knows our man Tim, is starting to lose it. He is not sure what to do, and he doesnt know that tomorrow will be an even worse day.
They accept his decision, and Tim makes his date with Danielle.
Later Holmes asks Huxtable, Is he Ok, we know Higgins is bright, but he seems to be talking quite quickly and becoming anti-social, what should we do?
Huxtable, who is very conservative, and worries too much isnt sure honestly. He doesnt have the mind Holmes does, so he garbles, Lets just think about it, I hope this all blows over, maybe his corporate visit will go well.
Holmes then asks, How was he in class today?
Huxtable answers, He was very quick to answer, the boy is bright, but very unfocused. I honestly dont know what to do?
They conference for a bit then decide they will try to give him some help in London. The Birmingham group is already arranged and it would be best to let things flow.
Holmes is curious though. He would really like to know more about what is happening with Huggins. He honestly isnt that sure what to do. He would like it if the Dean of the Friedman School, Jean de Lafeyette, was still on campus. He might know more about the situation. It might also help to ask some students he thinks.
He is worried about the issue but decides not to press things. But to not miss a formal class dinner seems quite odd to him. Wouldnt it make more sense to schedule the date for another time?
Tim wondered about this very same issue not long after leaving Danielle. Maybe he just misread the situation, he was having lots of fun, and thought everyone started to desire him, both male and female. He had a lot of fun, but was it worth canceling his formal dinner? He didnt know how to get in touch with Dani, as he didnt have her number at Chaucer college. He had a picture though, and thought she was one of the most beautiful girls he had seen .
Tim had ideas in his mind, about getting a scooter and maybe a place in Pasadena and N. Hollywood, and running it around town. Nevermind the issue, that a scooter is not close to street legal for the vast freeway system of LA. And of course, at this point he had no idea that his truck was totaled back in California. The whole idea of running through town in Vespa was pretty cool. This was 3 years before the dreadful Alfie movie came out, and also before the chef on the 2-year reality show the Resteraunt came on with him also on a scooter.
Maybe it would have been fun. Tim saw himself doing something important, and was considering doing further research at Oxford. Part of him longed to spend a few weeks in the catacombs of the great Bodleian Library, but he would have to pay for access which was not part of the Oxford-Mason/Friedman program. It seemed to him this was a very odd oversight. The idea of paying 50 pounds (about 80 US Dollars at the time) to research for a week just sounded crazy. He should have just gone down to the library and asked. He could be quite persuasive. He could also be entirely loony. Such was his emotional state at the moment.
So Tim decided to go on this date tonight. He then made the very odd move of telling Amelie about it. As you could well imagine she was quite upset by this turn of events. She was very much enjoying her time with not so tiny Tim and was wondering what was going on. It was not so long ago that she felt his wonderful cock inside of her. Although that part of the encounter was short she longed to do it again. She also knew that her husband would quite enjoy watching. In fact, it made John want to come out to England ever the more.
She exclaims, Tim, are you OK? Why would you skip the formal dinner for this? She is frankly quite hurt. She doesnt understand what is going on. She also worries about tomorrow. She can tell that Tim is just plain off, he is still very energetic, she thinks but completely unfocused. And why didnt he come back to class today? Why did he decide to move out of the dorm? She thinks Tim needs people all the more, but keeps drifting away.
Timothy wonders if he fears meeting John. He knows this will be a completely odd meeting. He always considered himself straight but not narrow, in his current state though anything is beautiful. Tim does not want to cross the border to bi-sexuality though. The complete naughtiness of it all excites him, but it all just feels very weird.
Tim replies, I am fine, just things seem to be going every which way, I am a little worried about Birmingham tomorrow. Danielle seems so wonderful too. She is an actress, and she has this lovely voice. I find her gorgeous.
Amelie felt extremely hurt by this. She considered there time in Geneva to be amazing. She seems Timothy headed down an odd path. She pleads, TimTom I am talking as your friend. First, I dont want to hear anything about Danielle. So she is great, whatever. Go to the dinner tonight. People are wondering about you already. Have a nice dinner, have some wine, hear some interesting speeches and such. Part of what makes Oxford great is the pomp and tradition. Why dont you just come tonight? Can you do it for me?
Tim is puzzled. Amelies pleas make a lot of sense to him. He wonders if he should just take her advice. He feels very excited to be going out with this theatre person and feels in awe of his talent and beauty. He says, OK, thanks for the advice, I will try to swing by the dinner after I see Danielle. He then makes his way out.
On his way out, Ami asks, Why are you distancing yourself from people? I know you are feeling weird right now, but dont run away from everything?
With that Timothy ran away from Amelie. What he should have done is gone into her arms and cried. Danielle would have been fine without Tim, but Tim really needed a friend like Amelie right now. He would realize this tomorrow. He would also realize Birmingham was a big mistake.
Tuesday, on the road to Birmingham
Alex, one of the people Timothy hates most in this trip, rented a British luxury car on the trip to Birmingham. The car is very nice and get fit the 5 of them comfortably. Timothy did not sleep well last night, he feels tired, overwhelmed and sad.
Last night, Tim prepared to go out with Danielle. He felt very confident, and very happy. He listened to Amelies advice, but he mainly discarded it. He went to the Lions Head Pub where they agreed to meet at 6 but no Danielle. He waited about an hour, had a couple of pints of beer, then left.
For any man, this would feel bad. In Timothys state, the no-show, felt disorienting. He had left the head table for the dinner tonight, which he knew was a BIG deal in the Oxford programme, he had also left class early. He wondered why the heck he was going to Birmingham too, he switched with another student, and now wishes he was going to London.
He did get to the end of the dinner and he got something to eat. He sat with the students, but could tell immediately he missed something. The dining commons had put out a grand feast, and this was a very special event. How could he be so stupid? He also felt very removed from the group. What was happening with himself? He had felt quite stable in the 4 years since he was hospitalized, but he knew he was completely off. He went to his lonely room in St. Thomas College and wondered what was next. He wasnt looking forward to Birmingham this morning.
But, here he was on the road. He could tell that this was a very bad idea. Alex was a very bossy type, and they were completely feeling cross. He could just sense bad things coming from him.
Alex liked to brag that he worked in the Bush and Reagan adminstrations. Tim couldnt figure out how this class 1 asshole had made it so far. He tried to restrain himself, and get some sleep, he was feeling emotionally and physically exhausted and was hoping he would make it through the day.
The drive was lovely as they passed through the English Countryside going directly though Stratford-upon-Avon (Shakespeares birthplace) and passing the castle where Churchill lived (quite close to Oxford). Tim thought these would be great trips on the way back.
We then got towards Birmingham. Alex considered himself far smarter then anyone else and could not admit he was lost. I, Timothy suggested directions but Alex wouldnt listen. Jane, who was also in the car, completely sympathized with Alex and would not take any suggestions. Thus, Alex made us late and would not pull over and ask for directions. Both, Alex and Jane looked at Timothy crossly when he asked someone for help in a British-like accent. I think these right-wingers thought using the slang of England, was a slap against America. Timothy was already tired and was now absolutely furious of the Alex and Jane cabal. He could tell this would be a bad day.
So the group finally arrived at the Levins-Canberra-Dewitt company. It was quite industrial and made auto parts. Somehow, Timothy thought they were much more of a conglomerate and made multiple goods. He could have gone down to Whitehall, London or the City and visited Citigroup or Lloyd of London, or the Bank of England. Or he could have went to greater Oxford, and looked at the biology-business partnership that the University of Oxford had set up. But no, he was nice and switched groups with someone, Tim was always nice like this. Of course, this wasnt nice to himself just to others. Tim knew this was a bad move.
So Timothy, Alex, Jane, Amelie, and the much quieter Elizabeth entered the Levins company, it was very nice and well-appointed. The executives there were quite well-mannered. Usually, Tim would have done fine in such a room. He may have been quiet, but could handle it. Unfortunately, Tim had never been in such a weak emotional state before. The smallest slight, after the tough trip down could set him off.
Timothy thought it would be a nice idea to give the executives at the L-C-M company a set of cufflinks from St. Thomass College. He gave this gift and Alex and Jane thought he was even madder, they just couldnt understand it. How someone as narrowminded as Alex, had gotten a major government/political job Tim just couldnt understand.
So the meeting began, Sir Micheal Matthew Costello, a very proper Vice President of Operations, was there along with 2 of his colleagues James Kent and George Seaver. So the questions started, Timothy had a lot of them, but was interrupted quite early, by Alex, he couldnt understand Alex, and it seemed like he was trying to push Tims buttons, which were getting more frazzled by the second.
Timothy tried a question again and was rudely interrupted. He couldnt understand Alexs agenda. His cold nature finally set him off. There was a 3rd interruption, and Timothy Thomas Higgins just lost it.
Tims thread had been getting shorter and shorter thoughout the day. Alexs not listening to him in the car when being late had angered him terribly and the interruptions in the meeting were just too much. Timothy went uncontrollably and had to leave the room. George Seaver, a General Manager of Carberator Construction and Design, came with him.
On Tims way out, Amelie just glared at Alex. She thought Timothys reaction was completely overboard but thought Alex was being a complete bully. She couldnt believe the emotional schoolfight of two men in their twenties and thirties. Amelie said, Alex you should apologize to Timothy soon, I think he needs to calm down first though. Sir Costello was very nice to invite us here today, but we need to check on Timothy for 5 minutes.
Alexander Kaufs initial reaction was to think good riddance. I dont know why he was on my team to begin with. He then realized what he had done. Why had he not asked Tim to change teams earlier, why all the bullying today. He then said, OK, I will apologize in a while, but I need to get all my questions out for our PowerPoint presentation next week.
Sir Costello then said something, your friend seems like a very smart and nice individual, I dont know what he is going through but something has set him off terribly. I will chat for a bit and I know you came a long way here to talk to me. I am quite willing to wait for you to talk to your colleague. Alexander, you have been bullying and I will not listen to your questions until you apologize. Mr. Higgins is clearly not himself today and I dont know all of what happens. I will listen to Elizabeth, and Amelie but not you Alex.
Alexander couldnt believe how he was singled out for this. He did nothing wrong. So he didnt listen in the car. So he hated Americans feigning a British accent. .. . Whats so bad about that. He got quiet, but was confused.
Jane Townsend was always a good girl. Quiet, respectful and getting good grades. She wasnt always the smartest person in the room, but always one of the best mannered. Ronald Reagan was her hero growing up, and she couldnt believe she was sitting next to someone who worked with him. And he was only 39. That means in 1987, at 25 years old someone had though enough of Alexander Kauf to make him assistant to the assistant of the undersecretary of Dairy Production. Jane, a very plain brunette, with nebbish features and big glasses, had never done well with men. But, she felt a kindred with Alex, he was 12 years older than her and was tall, blonde, and seemed so cool. She looked at disdain of Timothy, for angering her poor Alex.
Things were clearly weird, Alex had just sat back and thought the whole thing was a farce. He considered himself better then everyone, even Sir Costello. Amelie then said, Lets take a short break, emotions are clearly running high. I need to talk to Tim, and see how he is. Once I am done, Alex I demand you apologize, and I would like Jane too as well.
I literally haven't finished the Amelie story yet ... And yes that was fun to write .. This part felt more theraputic.

Me too. I always max out every year. It's nice to have leagues where you at least semi-know people instead of the public ones. But I don't mind kick some complete strangers ass.
