I have a new favorite exploitation/ porn director, and his name is Radley Metzger.
According to the dvd extras, Metzger started as a film editor, editing the trailers for art-house distributor Janus films. I just learned from the imdb, he also edited one of my favorite B sci fi movies, 1964's "The Flesh Eaters."
The picture I just saw, "The Dirty Girls," also from '64, is a series of vignettes about hookers and their tricks. Despite the subject matter, the film actually treats sexuality in a very innocent, sweet way you rarely see in contemporary movies. It reminded me of "The Last Picture Show." "Dirty Girls" even has a pool party scene that's a bit like the pool party scene in "Picture Show." I wouldn't be suprised to learn that Metzger influenced Bogdanovich.
I can't wait to see more Metzger pictures. Any suggestions?
