Just watched "King Creole," which is definitetly one of Elvis' best pictures. Unlike a lot of the bad Elvis movies, it doesn't have many scenes that are just excuses for Elvis to sing. It actually has a pretty compelling story.
Elvis' character, Danny Fisher, is a young hustler from the wrong side of the tracks trying to find a career for himself while avoiding getting mixed up with the mob. He has choices to make: between working for the honest club owner, Paul Stewart, and the gangster club owner, Walter Matthau, and between dating the "good girl," Dolores Hart, and the "bad girl," Carolyn Jones. It's an effective melodrama that really holds your interest.
By the way, Dolores Hart, the actress who played Nellie, the good girl, really turned out to be a good girl. She became a nun, and she is the only nun who is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
I have to get the soundtrack. Besides the great title track, Elvis also sang the beautiful ballad, "As Long as I Have You."
