I don't know about you, but l'm sick of hearing from Karl Rove and others about how everything is different in the post-9/11 world. I grew up in the 1970s, and I'm here to tell you, back then, you couldn't open a paper or turn on the news without hearing about some atrocity committed by the PLO, the IRA, the Greek and Turkish Cypriots, the Basque separatists, the South Moluccan separatists, etc. Don't ask me why, but back in the 70's, eveybody decided they needed their own country. And, let's face it, the South Moluccans needed their own country like John Holmes needed a larger penis.
Anyway, fast-forward to 2001. Hijackers fly planes into the Pentagon and World Trade Center. All of a sudden, Americans are saying it's a new world and we're besieged by terrorists. Forget about the fact that, in the 70's, before X-ray baggage screening, people hijacked planes nearly every week. Don't ask me why, but hijackers wanted to go to Cuba. Go figure.
What you have to understand is Americans are the most self-centered, narcissistic people in the world. It's like that Richard Pryor routine about the "drug epidemic." When black people used drugs, no one cared. When white suburban kids starting using drugs, everyone said: "My God, it's an epidemic!" Same thing with terrorism. As soon as a major terrorist attack occurred here, Americans started saying we're besieged by terrorists, it's a post-9/11 world, etc.
Actually, there was a major terrorist attack 5 years earlier, on April 19, 1995 at Oklahoma City. Funny how no one talks about a post-4/19 world. I guess, that's because the Oklahoma City bombing was committed by Americans, instead of foreigners. Which brings me to my next point: Americans are the most xenophobic people in the world....
