what the fuck happened while I was away.
everythings changed
ahh well I'll get used to it. eventually
Had a good weekend at Donington. Lots of beer, rum & coke & smirnoff ice (girly drink I know buts its damn refreshing in 30 degree heat. Honest
). Avoided any real bad sunburn by the liberal use of factor 30 sun block.
And watched loads of good music. Perfect.
Friday
missed most of the early bands as it was way too hot & we decided to stay in the relative shelter of our tent.
Animal Alpha were weird as expected, but enjoyable.
Soulfly were much better than the last time I saw them. They just seemed very tight during this performance. I was impressed
Fishbone were fishbone. What else can you say. awesome, charasmatic & provided the theme tune to the weekend - Alcholic.
Clutch were amazing. A perfect set delivered with the usual clutch brilliance (JP has to be my favourite drummer at the moment. the guy is genius & knows how to lay down a seriously mean groove.
The heat then drove me back to the tent until it was time for Tool.
I fucking love Tool (no prison sex tonight though
) The perfect way to end the 1st night. Chilled, with a beer listening to some of the greatest music ever written
Saturday
Down were the "secret" opening band on the main stage. I just don't get them. Phil was stoned out of his brain (he told the crowd to stop staring at him
) he could barely stand up & it was half 11 in the morning. the guy is just fucked up.
Sikth were damn good. Intense as fuck.
spent the next hour or so topping up the hydration levels
before it was time for
Alice in Chains It was great to hear those songs & the vocalist (can't remember his name) impressed a lot of people. But it was I anticipated. It was Layne's stage prescence rather than his voice that was missed. I got quite emotional during Rooster as I thought back to seeing them playing all those years ago at what was one of the most amazing gigs I've ever been too (somewhere in london) & how much of a loss Layne's death was to the music world. a great set but it just missed that spark.
more rehydrating insued & we drifted over to the 2nd stage for some shade. We unfortunatly were there when Billy Talent were on. I wish we hadn't been. they were dire.
Moved swiftly back to the hill by the main stage to crash for a while & watch Trivium who were rather average & Korn kareoke I've always hated this band & I still do. Corey Taylor sound good on the couple of songs he sang with them. I'm not a slipknot or Stone Sour fan but the guy has one hell of a stage presence.
Metallica a triumphant return. Master of Puppets in it's entirety, the "new song" & finish with die die my darling. by the end of the set I was exhausted, had lost my voice but was grinning like an idiot. Went straight back to my tent & collapsed.
Sunday
missed the 1st bands on again. had breakfast instead.
Not really interested in a lot of the bands on today so drifted over to the 2nd stage to stay out of the sun. Caught some of Zebrahead who were rather generic pop punk & excedingly average. Soilwork were due up next but weren't there so Devildiver played their 2nd set of the weekend instead. Wow very, very impressive. never thought to much of them before (mainly as I've always thought Dez is an asshole
) but they good.
Back to the main stage for 36 Crazyfists (poor) & In Flames who were pretty good before the heat forced me back to my tent again ( I'm a lightweight & I know it
).
Headed back to the 2nd stage later ready for The Prodigy but got there in time for Alexisonfire who impressed me. I'm not exactly gonna rush out & buy their records though
The Prodigy.
. Fucking loud, fucking hot, danced like a nutter & was dripping with sweat within the 1st minute. Beast band of the weekend.
G'nR pointless guitar solo - song - 5 minutes of silence - song - guitar solo - 5 minutes of silence. repeat until everyone's asleep.
Missed all the "excitement" in the campsite on sunday night. We were evidently in the grown up campsite. Thank god for that.
